The Emery Theatre – Cincinnati, Ohio
Project Warhol’s silent, short films behind Dean & Britta performing their “13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests” live. I didn’t really know what to expect, and wasn’t really sure what I was going to capture. I wasn’t familiar with Dean & Britta, and their roots in the 90’s dream pop/indie band Luna only sounded vaguely familiar. So I dug into “13 Most” the week before the show and quickly realized not only had I found something I could listen to over and over, but also felt like the music really did have a filmesque quality to it.
For the photography, I wanted to blend images of Dean & Britta with the films if at all possible. On one hand, Dean & Britta were very reserved and almost reverent to the films being played, doing their best to not take away from the films. Dressed in black in the dark theatre, their focus was on the films, the music and not on them. I did really want to get one particular shot I had in mind, that was when Britta was performing the Bob Dylan cover “I’ll Keep It With Mine”. (see the Nico screen test video at the bottom). I wanted to get Britta in the same frame as Nico. It took getting in front of the first row, on the floor, but the distance intensified the movements Nico makes in the film. The result was a ghostly feel to Nico to match Britta’s haunting sweetness.
It was a fast evening and the blending of film and music seemed to end so fast it’s strange to look back and think that I captured as much as I did. What hasn’t ended is putting on “13 Most Beautiful” and imagining any of it has stopped.
Below are a handful of the results of the evening…..
